Abbateggio, in the province of Pescara and only 2 to 3 miles from Roccamorice, is located on the left bank of the Lavino River on the peak of Colle di Cinta, at an elevation of 1450 feet.  The town has existed since the 10th century and has a population of about 400.  The old town center is very picturesque, characterized by narrow streets lined with typical stone houses.  The town's patron saint is San Lorenzo, and there is a church dating back to the 16th century which is named for him.  San Lorenzo's feast day is August 10, and there is a festa in his honor on that day.  There is also a three-day festa on September 7, 8 and 9 honoring the Madonna del Carmine, the Madonna dell'Elcina, and San Lorenzo;  one of the traditions of this festa is the "Processione delle Conche," a procession in which women of the town carry on their heads large copper vessels (called conche in dialect) filled with flowers.

At the Santuario dell'Elcina in Abbateggio, built in the 1400s atop a rocky hill overlooking the Pescara Valley, can be found an early 16th century terra cotta statue of the Madonna.  According to tradition, the Virgin Mary appeared here, in an oak tree--hence the name Santuario dell'Elcina (elcina means oak).  Also in Abbateggio is the Palazzo Simone.

In the course of the 1800s and for some years before, the phenomenon of "brigantaggio" occurred in Abbateggio. Many of these "briganti" (bandits) were actually partisans, fighting for the independence of their native land.  On 20 January 1799, when the French under Napoleon  were fighting for control of this area, the briganti of Abbateggio joined forces with those of San Valentino, Turrivalignani and Lettomanoppello and were led in opposition to the French by Francesco Paolo De Donatis. This is one of the more famous episodes that took place in the history of brigantaggio in Abruzzo.
