| Alanno, population 3600, located in the province of Pescara, is a typical small town of medieval origins, dating back to the 4th and 5th centuries A.D. It is believed to have been founded by monks from the monastery at nearby Torre de Passeri. It has always been an agricultural center, and its newer section, Alanno Scalo, is home to recent industrial development.
The old town, much of it lost to the earthquake of 1915, is located in a panoramic setting between the Pescara and Cigno rivers. In the year 849 it achieved independence from the Emperor Lotharius in recognition of the town's active involvement in the war against the Saracens. Endowed with mineral and sulphur springs, Alanno has been visited for the cures these waters have been believed to offer. Points of interest in the old town include remains of the ancient town walls, the feudal palace, and the church of the Madonna delle Grazie. This church originated in 1498, on the site of a miraculous apparition of the Madonna. It contains much artwork by the foremost Abruzzese painters of the 15th and 16th centuries. The local library contains 17th century illuminated manuscripts. An important agricultural school has existed in the town since 1872. |
