Ateleta, in the province of L'Aquila, is located on Colle Sisto at the southeast corner of the park, on the Sangro River which divides the region of Abruzzo from that of Molise.  The population is about 1300.  The town is situated on a plain--the Piano del Sangro--at an altitude of 1000 feet, and many crops including grains and fruits are grown here.   An independent town only since 1811, it grew from the settlements of contadini--peasant farmers--on the former feudal estates of Roccapizzi and Carceri, and it includes the villages of Carceri and Sant'Elena.

The town's name, "Ateleta," derives from Greek and is related to a five-year tax exemption granted by the King of Naples, Gioacchino Murat, in honor of whom the town's church was then dedicated to San Gioacchino.

The town was almost completely destroyed by the German occupiers in 1943,  during World War II.  At that time much of the town's population fled to Puglia in the south, as had the people of other towns in the area, seeking the protection of the Allied Command.  When they returned to Ateleta in 1944, they found their town reduced to rubble, but they did not despair.  Resigning themselves to the sad reality, they rummaged through the ruins for what few belongings they could find.  Sheltering in caves, barns and haystacks, they began the job of rebuilding, stone by stone.  Thanks to their courage and determination, together with some help from the government and the Allies, a new town stands at Ateleta today.
