Musellaro, a village which is administratively part of Bolognano
Bolognano
Bolognano, in the province of Pescara, is located on the hillside of the Valley of the Orta, in the Riserva Naturale della Valle dell'Orta on the northern edge of the park. It is at an elevation of 890 feet, and its population is about 1300.  The town also includes the villages of Piano d'Orta and Musellaro.

Bolognano had Roman origins, as evidenced by archaeological finds in the Santa Liberata and Sant'Anzino sections.  Musellaro had pre-Roman origins.  At Piano d'Orta there is a Roman stone bridge.  The first record of Bolognano is from the medieval period and indicates that the town belonged to the abbey of San Clemente a Casauria.  It later belonged to a series of feudal families, first the Carracciolo, followed by the Branconi, Filippo Nodari, and in the late medieval period the Durini.

The oldest part of Bolognano dates back to the medieval era and is characterized by narrow winding streets and buildings 5 centuries old; the remains of the defensive wall around the town, and its two gates, are here. Also here is the 12th century church of S. Maria Entroterra; it has been restored over the centuries, and its facade now dates from the 1600s.  In this church is a 16th century fresco, The Madonna and Child with the Saints, attributed to the painter Paolo Cardone of L'Aquila.  Also to be found in the old town center are the palazzi of the Durini and Palumbo families.

The two and a half mile long Grotta dei Piccioni (Cave of the Pigeons), located in the cliffs along the Orta river only a short distance from the town center, was occupied during the prehistoric era 7000 to 4000 years ago and is one of the most important archaelogical sites in Abruzzo.  For the prehistoric people of the area, this cave was an important religious site; here sacrifices were made and rites were performed to insure the fertility of the fields and bountiful harvests.  In later prehistoric ages there is evidence that the cave was a toolmaking site.

Another important cave near Bolognano is the Grotta del Mortaio (Cave of the Mortar), which contains ancient cave-paintings showing activities of daily life, such as hunting and other forms of work.
