Campo di Giove, in the Province of L'Aquila, has a population of 915 and is located in an area of pine forest at an elevation of 3500 feet, in the high valley between the Maiella and Morrone mountains.  The town's name, which translates as "Field of Jupiter," indicates its ancient origins, as does its location near a Roman road through the area.  In the 14th century, the town belonged to the Cantelmo family, and its subsequent feudal landlords were the Caldora, the Belprato, the Pignatelli and the Recupito.

Situated near Monte Tavola Rotonda, Monte Porrara, and Monte Amaro, the town is a natural base for those who want to climb and hike in summer, or ski in winter.  Campo di Giove has become a very important ski center.

The town's architecture is interesting for unexpected little houses with delicately carved mullioned widows and stone balconies.  The architecture is also characterized by sloping roofs designed to shed the snow away from the houses, and doorways set 6 to 8 feet above the ground (accessible by stairs) so that doors can be opened despite deep snow in winter.

The primary church is that of Sant'Eustachio, the patron saint of the town, containing a 15th century wooden statue of the saint.   There are five other churches: San Rocco, San Matteo, San Paolo, Sant'Antonio, and Madonnella di Coccia.   The oldest of these is the church of Sant'Antonio, located a mile or two above the town; it was built between 1264-1274 and was the site of a small convent.  There are a few remains of the ancient walls still there today.

Campo di Giove also has five old palazzi, or mansions.  These are the 15th century Casa Quaranta, the 17th century Palazzo Nanni, the 18th century Palazzo Riciardi, the 16th century Palazzo delle Logge, the Palazzo del Castello, and the 15th or 16th century Casono Belprato.
