| Cansano, in the province of L'Aquila, is located at an elevation of 2700 feet on the sunny northwest slopes of the Majella and Porrara mountains. Its population is about 357. A settlement at Cansano dates back to the Roman era and even earlier, to the original Italic people of the area. Archaeological studies during the 20th century uncovered the remains of an 8th century B.C. wall and a 5th century B.C. temple dedicated to Cibele.
The old historic center of the town, a walled village in medieval times, is all but abandoned now. However, the town still retains its medieval aspect, with the ruins of what was at the time one of the most important strategic castles in the valley. The castle was actually a watchtower built or enlarged by Count Manerio of Palena to keep watch on the "traffic" through the valley, which was a heavily travelled route connecting Sulmona to the Valle d'Aventino. In the town hall can be seen the stone lintel from a 16th century gate to the city, the Porta da Sotto; on the lintel are inscribed the date 1588 and the words: "Amicis semper aperta"--"Always open to friends."
