Caramanico Terme, in the province of Pescara, is a lovely town of 2250 inhabitants located at an elevation of 1700 feet on a cliff overlooking the Orfena River valley.  It has been famous for its thermal mineral baths, which are believed to cure a variety of illnesses, since the early 1800s, but the town actually dates back to the year 1000.

The original historic center of the town is very distinct from the present day center which has grown up around the thermal baths.  In the old center are interesting monuments which preserve the past--17th century mansions belonging to local noble families, elegant fountains decorated with grotesque masks, votive niches in stone, a charming mullioned window set in a house still in use--but the oldest among them, unfortunately, have been damaged by earthquakes over past centuries and have lost many of their original characteristics.

In the historic center is the magnificent church of Santa Maria Maggiore.  Built in the 15th century, this church was a true fortress, with high walls and a tower.  Also of interest is the church of S. Tomasso Apostolo, a splendid example of romanesque-gothic architecture located just outside the town.  This church has wonderful gothic carvings of Christ and the apostles over the main door.

Another point of interest near Caramanico Terme is the Eremo di San Giovanni, part of which is pictured above, right.  Saint Onofrio lived at this eremo for seven years, about 1250 A. D.  If you visit the hermitage, you must be very careful, because you have to "crawl" along a ledge to get to it!
