| Just a bit to the north of Lettomanoppello is Cepagatti, population 8300, located on a small hill in the Pescara Valley, near the Nora River. The origins of this agricultural town probably date back to a Roman fortress once located there.
In ancient times known as Capagato, the town's name "probably derives from the toll ('pagato' means paid) which travellers had to pay as they passed through the town gates. For centuries, Cepagatti was one of the most dangerous towns in Abruzzo. Anyone who wanted to enter the valley of the Nora River had to pass through here, and it was surrounded by thick forests swarming with crooks and brigands. Ambushes, attacks and murders were everyday events and gave it an infamous reputation. The dreaded forest was finally cleared by the Valignani family, the last feudal lords of the area. Today it is fertile land, cultivated with wheat and olive trees. The Lombards built a fortress, a tower of which survives in the woods near the town."
