This photo came from a webpage about the town at www.profesnet.it.
This town in the province of Chieti, with 1050 inhabitants, is located on the eastern slopes of the the Maiella mountains at an altitude of 2000 feet.  It has been continuously settled since prehistoric times; recent archaeolgical work has brought to light prehistoric graves, stone-age tools, and the ruins of a Roman villa.  The town includes the village of La Fonte, where the ruins of a Roman bath, including a mosaic floor, were recently discovered.

The first written records of the present town date back to the 12th century.  The name of the town derives from the fact that it was the civita or feudal holding of a man named Raimondo Caldora.

The old center of the town retains its medieval characteristics and is a web of narrow winding streets lined by simple houses.  The town belonged to a series of noble families over the centuries, the last of which, the Baglioni, built a small castle that remains today--the castello Baglioni.  Located in Piazza Roma, the castle commands a view of the Santo Spirito Valley below.  Near the castle is the 18th century church of S. Salvatore, over the door of which is a fresco of the town's patron saint, Sant'Erasmo.
