This photo of the ancient carved pulpit in Cugnoli's church came from an Italian website about agrituismo in Abruzzo.
Cugnoli, a small town with a population of about 1800, located in the province of Pescara, is about 20 miles from the city of Pescara.  Situated at an elevation of 1100 feet on a hill overlooking the valley of the Cigno River, Cugnoli is an agricultural town, the main crops being grapes, cereals and olives.

The town is first mentioned in a document from 1173 A.D., at which time 36 families were counted in the census and taxed.  Each of them had to send a soldier and half a horse to the Norman King William II.  He ended up with just three soldiers and six servants.

Cugnoli still looks much as it did in medieval times; a fortified village with houses built of local stone in casa-mura style - the outer houses built in a ring and joined together to form a second defensive wall within the main wall around the village.  The medieval walls that surrounded the town can still be seen, and the front part of the old castle still survives.

The church of San Stefano, the town's patron saint, was constructed in the 13th century and expanded and restored in the 15th and 17th centuries.  Although it is a simple building, it houses one of the art treasures of Abruzzo--a carved stone pulpit (
see above) created in 1160 by master-sculptor Nicodemus of Guardiagrele.  The church also contains 16th century polychromed wooden statues of the Virgin and Archangel Gabriel, and it has a 17th century bell-tower.
