Katie Alleva matgulliford@hotmail.com Hi! My dad was born in Fara San Martino and I want to visit someday soon. My aim is to rent a house there one day and stay for a little while and meet some relatives, learn about the traditions and culture. ARUFFO / ARZIO / GARZIA / GROSSI Nicholas Arzio nicholasarzio@gmail.com Ambrosina Aruffo, b. 1889 to Lucia Di Marino and Luigi Aruffo Giovanni Arzio, b. 1889 (in Casalbordino) to Eugenia Grossi and Errico Garzia/Arzio (His name changed) Giovanni Arzio married Ambrosino Aruffo in 11-25-1909 CESARINI / RENZO Frank Cesarini fcesarini@hotmail.com Gino Cesarini and Ann Renzo were both born in fara and immigrated to Australia in the 1950's. Both are still going strong and have been back to Fara many times including this year (2006). COSENZA / PICCOLO Louis Cosenza ,Baton Rouge, LA cosenzal@bellsouth.net I am planning a trip to la Fara this summer. Two points of embarkation are evident on this website. Australia, and to a lesser extent, Philadelphia. My father (Arturo Cosenza) was from South Philly. Both of his parents, Luigi Cosenza and Maria Piccolo were from Fara San Martino. They arrived in Philadelphia about the same time as your grandparents. Luigi sent for his father, Paolo, who also lived out his life in America. My grandfather had a very large family (12 children lived to adulthood) and my cousins and their offspring, who mostly still live in the Philadelphia area, number in the hundreds. Did the diMarinos or the Vernas ever speak of them? What is this Australia connection? I want to spend a day or two in the town of my ancestors. Any information I can get will be appreciated. On my mother's father's side, from Mannoppello: Cipressi (great-grandfather) and Mangina (sp?) (great grandmother). Their son, Alfredo Cipressi, came to the US (Phildelphia) at age 18 in 1913. SPELLING) Kathye Fetsko Petrie kpwriting@comcast.net My husband's family is from the Abruzzo region, primarily the town of La Fara San Martino. We are trying to figure out the correct spelling of his family name, which was changed at Ellis Island. There is a name carved on theimmigrant wall there, supposed to be my husband's grandfather, spelled ARTURO PETREI, I believe--we are not sure if this is correct or an error. ARTURO lived in America as ARTURO PETREE, he had two sons and two daughters (Theresa, Mary, Arthur, Joseph); Arthur Petree had three sons Joseph, Michael and David; Michael is my husband, who as a teenager changed his last name to PETRIE, thinking it the correct spelling. Does anyone know what the correct spelling of this family name from Abruzzo should be?I'd like it for the record, before the information is lost. Thanks so much for your help. I'm looking for some long lost Sciarra relatives in the USA whose parents/grandparents immigrated in 1913 and 1914. Nicola Sciarra and his wife Lucia Sciarra. They appear in the US census of 1920 as Nick and Lucy Shaw. Their daughter Mary immigrated with her mum and was called Giovina Sciarra. Other children's names were Josephine, Agnes, Julia and Nicholas all born in Pennsylvannia. Really looking forward to any opportunity of correspondence with them. VALENTE Lou Valente smaxo99@yahoo.com Fara San Martino is an absolutely magic place. I just returned seeking information on my paternal grandfather. The village is about 800 people. The largest employer is DeCecco pasta. And yes there are still plenty of Valente’s there. The oldest person in the village is a woman named Valente. We found this out at the end of our stay and never could connect with any of them. Well, now I want to learn to speak Italian well enough to go back on my own, since English speaking visitors are rare. We did find a young woman from another village to supplement the Italian skills in our party. So my grandfather, Nicola Santilla Valente was born December 3, 1873, came to US with his brother, Louis, left from Naples on November 27, 1896, landed in New York on December 13, 1896. His mother’s last name was Verna, father’s first name Pietro. In 1903 Nicola married Antonia Genovese in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, US. He became an American citizen on May 14, 1920. He was a machinist at Baldwin locomotive in Eddystone PA. There were four children born in US, Nicholas, Ann, Rose, Anthony and Mario, the youngest who was born in 1915. Best regards, Lou Valente |
