Gamberale, in the province of Chieti, has a population of about 486 and sits atop a rocky cliff on Monte Sant'Antonio, overlooking the Sangro River valley.   It is the highest town  in the province of Chieti, at an elevation of 4400 feet.

The origins of the town are uncertain, but it is probable that the first inhabitants of this area, in pre-Roman times, were the Marsi, one of the Italic tribes.  The first recorded mention of Gamberale is from the 12th century, when it was the feudal holding of one Raynaldus Gentilis.  In the 15th century the town was held by Raimondo de Anichino, and in the 16th century it passed to the noble family of Giovanni Crispani, who later sold the town's medieval castle to one Giuseppi Melucci.

The oldest church in the Gamberale, that of San Michele, was located in the highest and oldest part of the town, which is known as "monte la terra," but it was long ago destroyed.  All that remains is a statue of San Michele, kept in the present day church, San Lorenzo Martire, named for Gamberale's patron saint.   The church of San Lorenzo Martire dates from 1709; in its entry is an interesting old reed organ.  A number of art objects are conserved in the church.

Gamberale is surrounded by splendid peaks and offers charming panoramic views of broad green plains and rocky cliffs, thick beechwood forests and numerous streams.  It makes an excellent--and tranquil--base for those who enjoy hiking in the mountains; there are a number of trails here.
