PEOPLE AND PLACES IN LU LETTE 2004

Antonetta Conte of Lettomanoppello, on the patio at La Noce restaurant with a photo of her grandfather Alfonso Mancini, soprannome "scarcarell'." (See Scrapbook Pg. 39 for a larger photo of Alfonso and more info about him.) Antonetta's children operate La Noce.   She has many interesting stories to tell.  During WW II she was a young wife, pregnant, and her husband was a prisoner of war, first in Africa and then Bombay.  Her father and the family were forced out of their home during the German occupation of Lettomanoppello, as were a number of other people in the town.  They found shelter on the side of the mountain, in caves, barns, whatever shelter they could find.  Despite her own difficulties, Antonetta recalls sometimes bringing food to escaped British prisoners of war hiding in the area.

At the far end of the belvedere is La Bottega, a shop specializing in flowers, plants and gifts.  Behind the counter is the owner, Maria Olga Di Matteo.

The same building that houses La Botegga has, on the second floor, a beauty shop - L'Angolo della Bellezza.

A 'new' statue on the belvedere, created by a Yugoslavian sculptor several years ago during the annual sculpting competition in Lettomanoppello.
