| September 2004. The tiny church of Sancti Petri ad Troiam in the lower section of Lettomanoppello. The church is set far back from the road and is now surrounded by new houses. But when it was first built around 1300 it was alone on a little plain bordering a sheep track over which flocks were herded south to Puglia in the fall. It was the custom at that time to locate churches along the sheep tracks, to provide a night's shelter and comfort to the shepherds.
The church has been destroyed and rebuilt many times over the centuries; in 1800 the surrounding plain was sold to the Lionelli family which built their home with materials taken from the church. It is here that the statue of St. Peter, carried in the annual June 29th festa, is kept. Formore about that festa, see Lettomanoppello Pg. 25 and see the photo on Lettomanoppello Pg. 18. |
