Palombaro, in the province of Chieti, is located on the eastern side of the Maiella at an elevation of 1700 feet; its population is about 1200 inhabitants.  Formerly an agricultural town (and still producing olive oil and wine), Palombaro's main source of employment now is shoe-making.

The origins of the town are uncertain, but nearby, just to the north of the Avellino River, was the Roman town of Caraceni.  During the middle ages Castrum Laromae was built on this site; it was destroyed in 1417 by the Hungarians.  The Roman ruins are therefore mixed with medieval ruins and consist of walls, a theater, paved streets and some buildings, one of which has a fine mosaic pavement.

Also nearby the town is the Grotta San Michele.  This cave was originally a pre-Christian place of worship devoted to the fertility cult of the goddess Bona, but in the 11th century a hermitage dedicated to the Archangel San Michele was built there (

Palombaro contains some fine churches: the parish church--la chiesa della Madonna della Libera--with a 14th century wooden statue of the Madonna; the church of Sant'Angelo (of which only the 11th century presbytery survives); and the 13th century Church of the Assunta, with a 14th century statue of the Madonna and Child.

From Palombaro it is possible to take a nine hour hike up Monte Amaro, the highest of the peaks of the Maiella, at 9100 feet.  The first half of the trail leads upward through the beech forest of Monte Ugno, followed by the summit of Monte Martellese at an elevation of 7300 feet, from which there is a vast panoramic view of the Adriatic Sea.
