Pescocostanzo, in the province of L'Aquila, is located on a high plain--the Altopiano Maggiore--on the southwestern side of the Maiella National Park, at an elevation of 2500 feet.  A charming Renaissance mountain town, famous for its craftsmanship in wood, wrought-iron, lace and gold, it is a popular spot for vacations and winter sports.

Pescocostanzo has been inhabited since the 2nd or 3rd century B.C.  Its first mention in written records is in the 11th century, when it is referred to as "Pesclum Costantii,"

This is a town which has preserved intact, over the centuries, much of its medieval, Renaissance and baroque architecture.  A typical example is the Collegiata (
see photo, bottom right), a church dedicated to Santa Maria del Colle, built in the 12th century, reconstructed after the 1456 earthquake and enlarged in the 17th century.  The interior of this church was crafted by local carvers and is noteworthy for its gilded wooden ceilings, a gilded wooden organ, a beautifully carved and gilded wooden pulpit, the wooden altar and the 13th century Enthroned Madonna carved from wood and dressed in a sumptuous 18th century costume.  In the last nave to the left is the Chapel of the Sacrament with a magnificent wrought-iron gate created in the workshop of a local artisan, Sante di Rocco, in the 17th century.  A museum next to the church contains paintings and silver work.

In Piazza Umberto I is the palazzo comunale or town hall (
see photo, bottom left), which preserves its 14th century clock tower.  Also in Piazza Umberto 1, as well as in several other squares and streets, are a number of palazzi or mansions from the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries, which belonged to wealthy families of those times.  Of particular interest is the Palazzo Fanzago in Piazza Umberto 1, restored to its original splendor and used now for cultural exhibits, shows and conventions.
