Located in the province of Chieti on a wooded foothill on the eastern side of the Maiella, near the Alento River at an elevation of 1000 feet, the village of Roccamontepiano has a population of 1986 inhabitants.  The town dates back to the Middle Ages, to at least the 12th century, when people were attracted to settle there because of the abundance of water.

The town grew up around a Longobard fort which had been built there to defend the eastern access to the Maiella.  It was initially colonized by Benedictine monks from the nearby Abbey of San Liberatore a Maiella in Serramonacesca.  Feudal control passed from the Abbey to the Orsini family in the 15th century, then to Bartolomeo d'Alviano, and in the 18th century if was possessed by the Colonna family of Rome.  In 1765 a landslide destroyed the oldest part of the village, which was subsequently rebuilt on the same spot.

Roccamontepiano's patron saint is San Rocco (
see photo of his statue, above right, and his church, above center).  Each year on his feast day, August 16th, people flock to the town to drink water from a miraculous spring, using a traditional ceramic jug made by craftsmen in nearby Rapino.  Points of interest in the town include San Rocco's sanctuary, the miraculous spring and the grotta of the miracle.  There is also the convent and church of S. Francesco Caracciolo, the little Madonna delle Grazie church and the ruins of S. Pietro a Maiella's monastery.  There are many luxuriantly wooded areas in which to enjoy nature.
