| Rosciano, in the province of Pescara, is located north of the Maiella National Park on a hilltop in the Pescara Valley, at an elevation of 700 feet. Its population is 3147. The first recorded mention of the town is in the year 1288, as Castrum Rosciani. Rosciano includes the villages of Villa San Giovanni, which was originally a possession of the Knights of Malta, Villa Oliveti, which in ancient times was given as a fief by the Abbey of Montecassino to the convent of Santa Maria in Portico in Naples, and Villa Badessa, a feudal possession of the Farnese family, which was given by Charles III to a group of Albanian refugees fleeing from the Muslims in the 18th century, when Turkey conquered Albania. Villa Badessa is home to the last Albanian community in Abruzzo; it follows the Greek rites, and at Easter, mass is celebrated according to the ancient Graeco-Albanian Byzantine liturgy.
Rosciano was founded by the Longobards and was built over Roman ruins. A defensive castle was erected during the medieval era, and the little church of S. Nicola was built by the Benedictine monks of the abbey of San Liberatore a Maiella at Serramonacesca in the 15th century. The town grew up around this nucleus. The town's economy is based primarily on agriculture, especially the raising of grapes and olives. Rosciano overlooks the ancient sheep-track which led from L'Aquila to Apulia, along which for centuries Abruzzo's sheep were driven south to Apulia in the fall and north to Abruzzo again in the spring. Points of interest in Rosciano include: the frescoes in the church of San Nicola (which has been completely modified from the original church but which does still contain the original doorway); the well-preserved tower of the medieval castle, now part of the mansion belonging to the Di Felice di Casale family, and beautiful Byzantine icons in the church of Maria SS Assunta at Villa Badessa (see photo, above right). |
