| Salle, in the province of Pescara, is located in the northwestern part of the Maiella National Park on the eastern slopes of the Morrone mountains at an elevation of 1500 feet. Its population is 414 inhabitants. The village is divided into two parts, Salle Nuova and Salle Vecchia, about a mile's distance from each other. Salle Vecchia, the original medieval town, was largely destroyed in the earthquake of 1933. Afterwards it was rebuilt a short distance away, as Salle Nuova.
Salle has been occupied since prehistoric times. Archaelogical finds in the San Nicola contrada (section of town), include iron spearheads and copper knives from the prehistoric era. In 1894 a farmer in the Peschio della Valle contrada discovered a tomb dating from 800 - 900 BC; the tomb contained objects connected with hunting and with cultivating the fields. The town is mentioned for the first time in written records at the end of the 10th century. For two centuries it was the possession of the Abbey of San Clemente a Casauria. Subsequently it belonged to a series of feudal families: the Colonna, the Gonzaga, the Carafa, the Aquino and the Genova. From earliest times there was a defensive fortified castle with surrounding walls and towers at Salle; the castle came first, and the town subsequently grew up around it. The ruins of Salle Vecchia make an interesting visit. The castle, which is of particular interest, is located between Salle Vecchia and Salle Nuova; it has been extensively restored by its present owner, the baron of Genova. The castle contains a museum which houses collections, furniture and other objects belonging to the baron. Of particular interest is a picture gallery containing works by Abruzzese artists, and also a room with a collection of arms and armor. There is a bedroom containing a bed in which Napoleon Bonaparte slept. Surrounding the castle are typical Italian gardens, with cypress and olive trees, and at its entrance is an ancient fountain. |
